The town of Oakville was founded in 1857 and was originally a well-known port for sailors and merchants. It’s well established ship building and lumber yards drew in the first settlers. Lakeshore was also an entry port for many American Slaves who were travelling the Underground Railroad in search of freedom. This rich heritage and history is preserved by three preservation societies: The Bronte Historical Society, The Oakville Historical Society, and The Trafalgar Township Historical Society.
